"Achterom is het kermis"

"When the front door of a house is full of dust and spider webs, you know you’re in Brabant. It may seem like no one’s home, but go around the corner and you’ll most likely find the residents in the kitchen, sitting around the dining table laughing vividly. They’ll welcome you with open arms and plenty of food, because "The more, the merrier". Cozy gatherings like this always last until the early hours. But don’t forget; make sure to enter the backdoor of a Brabants household, because "Aachterum is ‘t kermis" ("The fair is through the backdoor!")".

The phrase "Achterom is het kermis" was mostly used in the 19th century. Inhabitants didn’t have oversight on the front door, so they kept it closed. Initially it felt safer if people would arrive through the back. But this custom developed over the years in the hospitable habit of welcoming in guests whenever they want to stop by spontaneously. Everyone is welcome for supper or a drink, as long as they enter through the back door.
